Introduction
From LGBTQ+ to reproductive to educational rights – Republicans in the North Carolina Legislature have introduced a flurry of bills that affects everyone who isn’t a white, cisgender, straight man. My intent is to visit the legislature as much as possible and arrange meetings with people on both sides of the aisle to bring a personal message to them and try to plant seeds of understanding and love. To help me, I am working closely with Equality NC and Planned Parenthood South Atlantic. Not only will I be meeting with legislators, but I will be testifying on some of these bills when they go to committee.
Thanks to Trump, Musk, DOGE, and the Republican party, I should have plenty of time on my hands this summer because my job in medical research was eliminated when our group lost funding. After May 12th, I will be unemployed. I have already started looking for work and will be offering up my technology skills on a contract basis wherever I can.
Why Me
- I am a post-operative transgender woman who has lived her entire life in North Carolina, even having all surgeries performed in North Carolina.
- I have been involved in LGBTQIA+ work since at least 2007, when I helped found the LGBT Center of Raleigh.
- I have been involved in a leadership of trans-centric groups such as the Triangle Transgender Support group and the (since renamed) Transgender Initiative at the LGBT Center of Raleigh, where we were the first transgender group to march in NC Pride in Durham NC in 2008 (? my memory is not so good)
- While employed at Johns Hopkins University, I was selected as a co-chair of the Trans Awareness Task Force.
- I’m have the time, dedication, and fight to cause good and necessary trouble.
- I’m not afraid of who I am, where I’m from, and where I’m going.
